Tribal leaders are asking state lawmakers to kill a House resolution on the use of Native American mascots and symbols by schools, sports teams and other bodies.

House Joint Resolution 10 sponsored by Representative Rex Shipp seeks to discourage the removal of such mascots and logos without some type of public hearing or process.

Officials from a half-dozen Native American tribes issued their own resolution yesterday condemning the resolution and asking for it to be withdrawn.

The resolution has not been heard in committee and is unlikely to advance before the end of the session Thursday.
