The state is launching a four-million-dollar program to help Utahns who can't pay their rent.

Jonathan Hardy of the state Department of Workforce Services says the program announced yesterday will offer assistance to renters who do not qualify for any other form of relief.

The state will pay landlords directly to keep them from evicting those who are unable to pay.

The governor's office is also considering extending a statewide moratorium on evicting renters that expires this Friday.

Bill Tibbitts of the Crossroads Urban Center says the rent assistance program may not matter unless the governor extends his moratorium on evictions.
