The damages from the record breaking number of fires over the holiday weekend is costing local counties a high price.

Iron County officials say that the fires and suppression efforts from Fourth of July weekend is totaling in the hundreds of thousands of dollars, which most of it will fall on taxpayers.

Fire officials say departments were so overwhelmed they did not have a truck to respond to a new fire if one were to happen as a majority of the fires are suspected to have been caused by fireworks.

On Independence Day, Iron County saw an estimated 33 fires within a 12-hour span, which broke a 1996 record.
