License plates aren't exactly something you think about often. At worst, you'll have to pull the numbers from another car if they're driving recklessly, but 90% of the time, these metal identifiers go unnoticed.

Vanity plates are, of course, the exception, when drivers can throw funny or personalized messages on their plates for a small fee. The game has finally changed in Arizona, though.

Arizona's New License Plate Policy

For much of ADOT's history, license plates have been issued in sequential order. Plates started with three letters, followed by four numbers, starting with AAA-0000, and moving up, number by number and letter by letter for each following issue.

Starting in 2021, Arizona's policy changed, and allowed for much more variety, but also a lot more chaos. Plates are now assigned randomly, with a randomly generated jumble of numbers and letters making up your plate.

Your License Plate Says WHAT?

With this new method of randomly assigning license plates in place, Arizona residents have noticed something peculiar. Many plates on the road today seem to be vanity plates, but end up meaning nothing at all. Since there's no required number of letters or numbers anymore, the system can easily throw together 7 letters to say something like "YEA OMG" or "BRA OFF" (both actual Arizona license plates) with no intent from the driver.

Luckily, ADOT does keep tabs on these, and will stop a potentially offensive plate from getting all the way to the road. Not only does this make Arizona's plates the most unique in America, it also makes driving around the Arizona interstates just a little more interesting.
