Chapter 11 Playground Threats 66
A woman, a mother who volunteered, watched the playground during recess. On this day she was helping some kids check out a ball for soccer and wasn’t watching. Jonathan was playing by himself in the rocks near the slide, when Bronco and his two friends cast their shadow over the ground in front of him.

“Hey freak, those are my rocks you’re playing with.”
“What do you mean?” asked Jonathan.
“I own these rocks and now you owe me for playing with them.” Bronco leaned towards him with a frown.

“You don’t own the rocks. The school does,” said Jonathan, looking at the ground.
“I say I do.” Bronco turned to his two friends. “I own the rocks here, right?” The two boys snickered. “That’s right freak, he does,” said Conner. “And unless you want us to smash your face in them...” He pushed his fist into the palm of his other hand.
“When are you going to pay me for using my rocks, freak?” asked Bronco.
An Emotional Reaction
Jonathan’s stomach became tight with tension. “I don’t have any money.”

“Well, that’s too bad, but I’ll tell you what I’ll do. Bring me five bucks tomorrow and I won’t make you eat them.” Bronco glared at him and started to move away as the woman who monitored the playground was returning. “Don’t forget tomorrow, freak.”
