In the 1970s the population in St. George was around 7,000 people. Even though city was much smaller, don't think it was the middle of nowhere. This video from YouTube shows what some of the town looked like as well as the locals skateboarding skills.

Skateboards Surged in Popularity in the 70s

There isn't a lot of information on the video other than that it is from St. George, Utah and it was a skateboard movie. It looks like it was filmed on a home movie camera and the quality has degraded over time.

Still, the views of vintage cars and homes from decades past is fun to look at. What is even more impressive is the skills of the kids flying around on what passed for a skateboard in those days.

The Resurgence of the Skateboard in the 70s Had Everyone Riding

These boards were thin and usually made of wood although there were some fiberglass versions as they improved over the decade. The board was straight without a kick-tail in the back.

You can see by the video how much kids time spent improving their skateboarding skills. They built ramps and at one point a teen girl is riding one on top of the another board. It was obviously a time when kids spent a lot of time outdoors.
