Deputy shot by St. George man dies

A Los Angeles County Sheriff's Deputy who was allegedly shot by a Utah man on Monday has died.  Sheriff Alex Villanueva [[ VEE-uh-new-WAVE-uh ]] made the announcement about Deputy Joseph Solano outside the Los Angeles County Medical Center. The deputy was shot in the back of the head Monday night at a fast food restaurant in Alhambra.  On Tuesday, police arrested 30-year-old Utah resident Rhett Nelson.  They believe he killed the deputy and a different person an hour before near downtown Los Angeles. Investigators think he may have committed other crimes.

Family of man that killed deputy reported him missing two weeks ago

The family of a Utah man reported him missing two weeks before he allegedly shot and killed two people in California.  Captain Mike Giles of the St. George Police Department says the family of 30-year-old Rhett Nelson reported him missing May 28th and followed up that report on June 5th. Giles says that the St. George Police Department was told that Nelson was carrying a gun at the time he disappeared.

Senator Romney says he can solve healthcare problem

Utah Senator Mitt Romney says he has developed a health care plan that could be a replacement for Obamacare.  Yesterday, Romney told political publication The Hill that his plan is ready but that he is not going to release it until he sees what kind of support he can get.  Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has shut down recent attempts by the Trump administration to find ways to repeal and replace the health care law currently in place

Prosecutors refuse reduced felony charges for St. George woman

State prosecutors are refusing to reduce felony charges in the case of a 39-year-old Saint George woman charged with child neglect and abuse.  Jennifer Rose was arrested in October after her three-year-old son Brandon and his older disabled brother went missing.  Officers said Rose left them to go to Mesquite to sell herself to get money for drugs.  A family friend found the kids alone with dirty needles in the house, and took them.  Brandon tested positive for amphetamine.  Rose's attorney says she's in drug treatment.

Former LDS Bishop sentenced in sexual misconduct

A former bishop for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints will spend four months in jail after he was convicted on misdemeanor sexual misconduct charges.  Fifty-four-year-old Jeffrey Head of Draper was charged with assaulting a teen boy from his ward when he visited him following a surgery.  Under his sentence, he will spend four years on probation upon his release.  An LDS Church spokesman says Head was immediately removed as bishop last year when the allegations arose.

Congressman Stewart wants better access to suicide prevention resources

Republican Congressman Chris Stewart is part of a bipartisan push to improve access to suicide prevention resources.  Under the Improving Mental Health Access for Students Act, colleges and universities would be required to provide information for the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline, Crisis Text Line and campus mental health centers on student ID cards.

Utah's beer drinkers may force shortage

Utah's beer drinkers may face a short period where they won't have their favorite brands on the shelves of state grocery and convenience stores.  Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control Executive Director Sal Petilos said on a podcast this week that those stores may run out of some brands of three-point-two beer before they can begin stocking heavier versions of those brands on November 1st.

Record lake trout caught at Flaming Gorge Reservoir

The Utah Division of Wildlife Resources is certifying a big fish caught at Flaming Gorge Reservoir as a record setter.  DWR announced yesterday that the 48-inch lake trout caught May 4th by Matt Smiley of Fairplay, Colorado was a state record.  Smiley caught the fish and then released it back into the waters of the reservoir.  Wildlife Resources says the fish was not weighted to avoid keeping it out of the water any longer than necessary.

Moab man sentenced in killing

A man who shot and killed another man last year in Moab is sentenced to 32 years to life in the Utah State Prison.  Thirty-one-year-old Omar Guerro was sentenced Tuesday.  Several people saw what happened last October when Guerro stood a foot away from 30-year-old Edgar Luna Najera and shot him twice during an argument.  Guerro was arrested in November after officers tracked him to Arizona.  Since he's been in jail, Guerro has been charged with assaulting an inmate.
