The Utah House will now decide the fate of a bill that would ban most elective abortions in the state.

The state Senate passed SB-174 yesterday on a 22-6 vote.

The bill by Republican state Senator Dan McCay would only allow abortions in the case of rape or incest, if the life of the mother is at risk or if the unborn child had a serious health problem.

Even if the bill passes the House, it would not take effect unless the 1973 U.S. Supreme Court legalizing abortion nationwide is overturned or reversed.
