Governor Gary Herbert is calling a tax reform package unveiled by state Republican leaders a step in the right direction to lower taxes for all Utahns.

Asked yesterday if he could promise a tax cut is coming for Utah families, the governor said he could.

Herbert said yesterday that the bill crafted by lawmakers isn't perfect, since he feels the sales tax should be even lower.

The bill introduced Wednesday slightly lowers income taxes and drops the state's overall sales tax rate to nearly three-percent.

It also broadens the state's tax base by forcing businesses that provide services to pay sales taxes.
