Effective June 8, Saturday morning at12:01 a.m., strict fire restrictions went into effect in Zion Canyon aimed at preserving its natural beauty and safeguarding visitors. The decision comes as a proactive measure to mitigate the risk of wildfires amidst changing environmental conditions.

Under the new guidelines, visitors are prohibited from setting, maintaining, or attending open fires of any kind within the park premises. Specifically, campfires and charcoal fires within Watchman Campground and picnic areas are strictly forbidden. However, stoves fueled by petroleum or liquid Propane Gas (LPG) remain permissible.

Smoking near vegetation is also banned, except within enclosed vehicles or developed recreation sites, or in areas devoid of vegetation, ensuring a safe distance of at least 3 feet.

In a press release, Lyndsay Fonger, Zion National Park Fire Management Officer, emphasized the importance of individual responsibility in preventing wildfires. "One person’s actions can affect thousands of acres of land," she stated, urging visitors to refrain from activities that could endanger lives, property, and the park itself.

Violations of these regulations carry severe penalties, including fines up to $5,000, imprisonment for a maximum of six months, or both.

The decision to impose fire restrictions stems from the current environmental conditions at Zion. While a wet winter and spring led to lush vegetation, invasive grasses like cheatgrass have dried out, posing a significant fire hazard in the summer heat, particularly in campgrounds.

Visitors are advised to exercise caution and practice fire safety at all times. Simple measures, such as parking away from dry plants and refraining from using fireworks, are crucial in preserving Zion's pristine ecosystem.

By adhering to these guidelines, visitors can enjoy Zion's natural wonders while ensuring its preservation for future generations. Remember, fire safety is everyone's responsibility.

In the meantime, the #Rockville Fire burning just outside Zion National Park has been reported 100% contained by Utah Fire Info. That means there is a fuel break, minimal to no vegetation, completely around the fire. No structures were damaged in that fire, and many of the resources used in fighting the fire have been released, though firefighters remain on scene to monitor the situation.
