With everything seemingly in a constant state of evolution today, I think it is good that there are somethings in our lives that are constant and reliable. We are blessed to have an organization in Iron County that answers the bell again and again.

Iron County Search and Rescue is a volunteer organization based in Iron County, Utah, dedicated to providing search and rescue services in wilderness, rural, and urban settings.

Their primary mission is to locate and assist individuals who are lost, injured, or otherwise in need of rescue. They often work in collaboration with local law enforcement agencies, emergency services, and other organizations to coordinate and execute search and rescue operations.

Their motto, “We Will Always Come To You,” has been shown to be accurate time and time again and proved true again this weekend.

The call came in again this weekend, and Iron County Sheriff's Search and Rescue responded. Thankfully, conditions were a little more favorable then searching around in the mountains during a winter blizzard.

On Saturday, August 26, 2023, the Iron County Sheriff’s Search & Rescue (ICSSAR) volunteers and ropes team were paged to respond to a report of a male with a broken arm at Kanarra Falls. The call came in just before 2 in the afternoon.

The team was alerted that the patient was located beyond the second falls. 5 ICSSAR volunteers, 4 ICSSAR ropes team volunteers, 3 Iron County Sheriff’s Deputies and two clinicians with Gold Cross Ambulance assembled at the falls.

After the patient was stabilized, he was able to hike out on his own with the rotating assistance of our volunteers, Sheriff’s Deputies, and ambulance service staff. The patient was transported by ambulance to the hospital for further evaluation and care.

Cooperation seemed to be the prevailing mind set Saturday as ICSSAR thanked all the hikers they encountered during the rescue operation, saying in a press release, “everyone was patient and kind, providing our teams space to quickly respond to the patient and to safely assist him back to the ambulance.”

Be it in the heat of a summer weekend, or in the frantic time of a winter storm on the mountains of the area, the Iron County Sheriff's Search and Rescue can be counted on to show up and provide the aid and service needed to those who have lost the way.
