Lawmaker Pushing Bill to Force BYU Police to Comply with Open Records Laws
ST. GEORGE - A lawmaker is pushing a bill that would force Brigham Young University's police department to comply with Utah's open records laws.
Under the proposal from Republican Senator Curt Bramble, a private university's law enforcement agency would still be considered a public government entity.
The legislation comes as BYU is in the middle of a legal battle with the Salt Lake Tribune.
The newspaper and LDS Church-run-university are embroiled in lawsuits involving recorded interviews between a BYUPD officer and a former leader of the Missionary Training Center who is accused of sexually assaulting a woman in the 1980s.
