A state lawmaker wants to make sure that local governments can't make any rules or ordinances that restrict Utahns' rights to own guns.

State Representative Corey Maloy of Lehi is sponsoring a bill emphasizing that the legislature is the only body in Utah that can make any laws on gun rights and gun sales.

The bill was introduced after Salt Lake County Mayor Jenny Wilson made a change in the county's policy regarding gun shows.

It would require any vendor at a show held in a venue owned by the county to conduct background checks on anyone buying a gun.

Last week, the county council voted 5-4 opposing Maloy's bill.
