Lone Vote Cast Against Tax Referendum
It was all against one when state lawmakers repealed the controversial tax overhaul bill.
The bill was initially passed in a special legislative session in December, but was met with significant push back from organizations such as Harmons Grocery and the Utah Parent Teacher Association.
The public banded together to pass a referendum that would force the tax bill into a public vote in the fall. Just hours after it was announced that the referendum had reached enough signatures, lawmakers voted to do away with the changes
The Senate voted 27-0 and the House voted 70-1.
The lone vote against the repeal belonged to Republican Keven Stratton from Orem.
Governor Gary Herbert signed the repeal Tuesday night.
