There's a website out there operated by the United States Department of Agriculture that specifically focuses on Recalls and Public Safety Alerts.

Surprisingly (considering I do news every weekday morning), I had never heard of any of these food alerts and recalls.

You might be shocked to find out that there have been eight major food recalls in the last month in the United States. Eight!

If I hadn't heard about them as a newsman, I doubt most of you had heard about them either.

Here they are:

  • July 1, Perdue Premium Meat Company is recalling approximately 3,204 pounds of fully cooked beef wiener products due to misbranding and undeclared allergens, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced today. The product may actually contain smoked sausage, which contains milk, a known allergen, which is not declared on the wiener product label.
  • June 30, Foster Farms is recalling approximately 76,961 pounds of corn dog products due to possible spoilage, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced today.
  • June 30, Panamerican Foods is recalling approximately 4,978 pounds of the pork and beef bean stew products that were imported from an establishment in Brazil that is not eligible to export meat products to the United States.
  • June 30, BCI Foods is recalling approximately 13,561 pounds of chicken noodle soup products that were not presented for import reinspection into the United States.
  • June 30, Distribuidora El Paisano Import, LLC,  is recalling approximately 1,715 pounds of imported ready-to-eat pork rind product that was imported from Guatemala, a country ineligible to export meat products to the United States.
  • June 16 -- Conagra Brands is recalling approximately 2,717 pounds of frozen beef shepherd’s pie products that may be contaminated with extraneous materials, specifically clear, flexible plastic.
  • June 15, Johnsonville LLC is recalling approximately 42,062 pounds of ready-to-eat (RTE) “Beddar with Cheddar” pork sausage links that may be contaminated with extraneous materials, specifically very thin strands of black plastic fibers.
  • June 9, JTM Provisions is recalling approximately 200 pounds of ready-to-eat (RTE) chili topping product due to misbranding and an undeclared allergen. The product labeled as chili topping may actually contain beef taco filling, which contains soy, a known allergen, that is not declared on the product label.

OK, so what the heck!?!?!

Black plastic fibers? Clear flexible plastic pieces? Illegal imports from Guatemala? Spoilage? Milk products in sausage?

I'm sooo glad the USDA is keeping an eye out for us (details on specific products and pictures of their labels are here). I hate to think what kind of product would reach us if they weren't performing these inspections.
