The website Stacker.com released a list of the cities in Utah with the highest poverty rates. What defines "Poverty"? The US Census Bureau defines Poverty as "if a family’s total income is less than the family’s threshold." Here's a list of the TOP 5 cities in Utah with the HIGHEST poverty rates:
5. South Salt Lake
South Salt Lake surprises me to even see their name on this list. They have 18 percent of people living BELOW the poverty line. That's around 4,500 people. Of that number, nearly 1,400 of them are employed. Over a quarter of all people under 18 are living in poverty in South Salt Lake.
4. Vernal
Vernal has 20% of people living beneath the poverty line. That's around 2,100 people. Of that number, over 550 of them are employed. 28 percent of people under the age of 18 are living in poverty in Vernal right now.
3. Cedar City
The lone Southern Utah city, Cedar City, has 20% of people living below the poverty line right now. That's around 6,500 people. Of those 6,500 people, nearly 2,300 of them are unemployed. Just below 20% of individuals under the age of 18 are living in poverty in this city.
2. Provo
Surprisingly, Provo has 26% of residents living below the poverty line. That's around 28,000 people. Of that number, ALMOST HALF of them are employed. 20% of residents under the age of 18 are living in poverty in Provo.
1. Logan
Logan, in Cache Valley has almost 28 % of people living in poverty. That's around 13,000 people. Of those 13,000, nearly 6,000 of them are unemployed. 30% percent of people under the age of 18 are living in poverty in Logan, Utah.
