New manufacturing plant slated for Iron County

Goex, a leading manufacturer of plastic sheeting, is coming to Cedar City. According to a news release sent Wednesday from the Utah Governor’s Office of Economic Development, the Wisconsin-based Goex Corporation will expand its operations by adding a facility in Utah, which is expected to add up to 100 jobs, $1.8 million in state revenue and an estimated $15 million in capital investment. The site was an attractive choice because it already has infrastructure in place, including railroad access, utilities and fiber optic cables.

St. George man arrested in undercover pedophile sting

A 33-year-old St. George man is arrested after being caught in an undercover pedophile sting.  Authorities say Isaac Mancilla chatted with an officer posing as a 13-year-old girl, and repeatedly asked her for photos of her naked backside.  Mancilla was charged this week with sexual exploitation of a minor, after he agreed to meet the undercover officer at a specific location in town.

Romney continues criticism of Trump

Senator Mitt Romney is criticizing President Trump for saying he'd accept opposition research on a political candidate from a foreign country.  The president said yesterday he would take such information even from a country looking to disrupt the election.  Romney told Politico today that accepting the work product of a foreign government trying to influence an election "strikes at the heart of our democracy."

100 thousand illegal immigrants in Utah

A new study shows there are over 100-thousand illegal immigrants living in Utah.  According to Pew Research Center, around 110-thousand illegal immigrants currently live in Utah, up by about ten-thousand over the last ten years.  Pew says the estimation is accurate within about ten-thousand people.

Man cited for lewdness in St. George

Police say a man was cited for lewdness Thursday in Saint George, after doing yoga in the nude at a park.  Officer Tiffany Atkin said police were called to the J-C Snow Park after getting calls about a man who was completely naked and doing yoga poses around ten in the morning.  Atkin told St. George News the man had been wearing shorts, which he put on again after finishing his stretches.  The man was cited for lewdness, a class B misdemeanor in Utah.

Storm system causes wildfires

A storm system that rolled through the Wasatch Front is being blamed for starting five wildfires in Tooele County.  Utah Wildfire Info says lightning was the cause of the fires, which were all under control by 8 p.m. last night.  The storm system is also blamed for causing some wind gusts of up to 69 miles an hour as well and hail in some parts of northern Utah.

Owner of Santa Clara Montessori school facing criminal investigation

The owner of a Santa Clara Montessori school is facing a criminal investigation after parents claim their kids were abused while in her care. Analee Talbot was charged May 17 with a Class A misdemeanor count of child abuse by the Washington County Attorney’s Office. Ruth A. Shapiro, the attorney representing Desert Edge Montessori with regard to the civil claims that may be brought by parents or former and present students. “We wholly deny these allegations, which appear to be brought by perhaps a disgruntled former employee through the use of social media,

Kayaker dies in swift water

A kayaker is dead after becoming trapped beneath water coming from a spillway on the Jordan River.  Unified Police Detective Ken Hansen says the unidentified kayaker was traveling north on the river with a friend yesterday when he went over the spillway near 4600 South in Taylorsville.  Bystanders were able to pull the man from beneath the water and the kayaker's friend began CPR, which was continued by paramedics when they reached the scene.  The kayaker died after being taken to the hospital.

Senator Hatch wants pay equity for all athletes

Former Utah Republican Senator Orrin Hatch is calling on the U.S. Soccer Federation to pay its female athletes the same as their male counterparts.  Hatch, who is currently the chairman emeritus of the Orrin G. Hatch Foundation, said in a statement Wednesday that pay equity is needed for all athletes.  He said the current two-tiered system used by U.S. Soccer unfairly discriminates against women.  The U.S. Women's Soccer team is currently competing in the World Cup.
