Hiya! I know, it’s been a while, but welcome back to Southern Utah Community Theater Watch! A lot has been happening around Southern Utah’s art scene that I unfortunately missed, but the arts don’t stop for anyone, and community theater continues to flourish in Southern Utah.

Here’s what’s on the docket for April and what’s beyond as we enter the second quarter of 2024.

St. George Musical Theater

SGMT is in the thicket of their run for Legally Blonde the Musical with a reportedly successful premiere on March 14. Performances will continue every Monday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday.

After Legally Blonde has hung its hot pink suit coat, Funny Girl will premiere at the St. George Opera House on May 9 and run until June 15. Funny Girl is a welcome surprise to many as it’s not done around Southern Utah all too often.

Hurricane Theatrical

Hurricane Theatrical will begin its season with Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat on April 5 and will run until May 11 with performances every Monday, Friday, and Saturday. A whole bunch of people have been working tirelessly both on the cast and production side to make it the best production possible.

One of my favorite aspects of Joseph is that it's short…OK now hear me out. Sometimes a show can stick around longer than it’s supposed to. Whether that’s due to the material or technical elements, a long show can be a slog if it’s not done correctly.

Joseph is FAST. It’s constantly moving and doesn’t stay on one scene for too long. If it didn’t have an intermission, you’d be out of the theater in 90 minutes. It’s a wonderfully fast-paced romp that many a theater lover has seen or been in.

What’s to Come for The Stage Door

While they don’t have a show planned for April or May, The Stage Door will put on a production of Assassins from June 20 to July 6. They’ll also provide a rare glimpse of the world of Gypsy in Southern Utah on July 25.

Support the arts by attending every one of these shows and being an active member of the audience, and I mean EVERY show. If I don’t see you all at every show mentioned here, I will hunt you down and jazz-hand the crap out of your face. Love you all!
