Workers have begun the process of taking items out of the Salt Lake Temple to prepare the landmark for a major renovation project.

Leaders for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints call the process "decommissioning," and say for the next several weeks workers will remove religious items from the temple before crews begin construction.

The LDS Church closed the temple on December 29th to begin a four-year renovation of the building.

Later this month, the South Visitors' Center and portions of the south wall  of Temple Square will be demolished.
