Breaking the 4th wall should not be taken lightly. What do I mean by that? In theater, there is a sense of disbelief that comes with the experience of sitting in a packed theater to be taken away to a new world.

You don’t exactly want to be acknowledged as an audience member; you just want to be along for the ride.

Not so with my personal favorite slap stick play of all time, The Play That Goes Wrong.

The Utah Shakespeare Festival is currently producing a version of The Play That Goes Wrong until October 7, and I had the pleasure of going to one of the performances over Labor Day weekend.

The premise is quite simple, but hard to execute.

A theater company is putting on a murder mystery play, but they don’t have the best track record. They have a special opportunity to put on a larger show, but things start to fall apart in various ways throughout the performance.

You’re not watching a murder mystery; you’re watching a cast of actors struggling to make it to the end of a performance.

It’s one of the most surreal things to watch…EVER.

Sets fall apart, actors forget their lines, and the most ridiculous of scenarios unfold before your eyes.

This type of comedy is like balancing on the thinnest of tightropes. It could be the worst thing you’ve ever seen, or it could be the funniest thing you’ve ever seen.

The Utah Shakespeare Festival’s version of The Play That Goes Wrong is without a doubt a part of the latter.

The show was long, not because of the content, but because the show would grind to a halt from all the laughter coming from the audience.

I was laughing so hard, I ended up suffering from a headache the size of Mount Everest.

If you’re fan of non-stop slapstick, you’re going to adore The Play That Goes Wrong at the Utah Shakespeare Festival.
