Wildfire burning near Delta

A new wildfire is burning in Millard County.  Crews say the Swasey Fire has burned about an acre 35-miles west of Delta.  Flames broke out Saturday following a lightning strike.  So far, no buildings are threatened and there have been no reports of injuries.  Containment remains at zero-percent.

Small earthquake yesterday morning near Cedar City

There are no reports of injuries following a small earthquake yesterday that rattled parts of Southern Utah.  The University of Utah says the magnitude three-point-two quake struck just after 3 p.m.  The epicenter was located about 34-miles east of Cedar City.

Utah ski resorts receive snow

Three Utah ski resorts are buzzing after getting their first snowfall of the 2019-2020 ski season.  Alta, Brighton and Snowbird all reported snow yesterday, and it raised hopes for another long and profitable winter for the three resorts.  None of the resorts plan to resume ski operations until November.

Man who bought gun in U of U murder out of jail

The man convicted of buying the gun that killed University of Utah student Lauren McCluskey will not be spending any further time in jail.  Nathan Vogel was sentenced to time served and three years probation yesterday in federal court in Salt Lake City.

Family of firefighter killed suing

The family of a Utah firefighter is suing the state of California and an air tanker company, saying they are responsible for his death.  Heather Burchett and her son Griffin filed the lawsuit Tuesday in a state court in Sacramento, California.  Burchett's husband, Draper Fire Battalion Chief Matthew Burchett, died last August after a low-flying air tanker dropped nearly 20-thousand gallons of fire retardant on top of his position.

New prison taking shape

The new state prison site west of the Salt Lake City International Airport is starting to show some visible signs of progress.  Buildings are starting to take shape at the site following two years of infrastructure and foundation work. The entire complex should be completed by 2022, at a cost of more than 800-million-dollars.

Utah residents can now see how school districts spend money

Utah is giving interested residents a way to see how school districts are spending taxpayer dollars.  The Utah State Auditor has created a website that seeks to answer the question of where money goes in public education.  The website tracks total spending by school district, as well as showing spending by public charter schools.

Utah state representative proposes ban on vaping products

A Utah state representative will try to ban all vaping products during the next session of the state legislature.  Representative Paul Ray announced yesterday that he has had an independent lab do a study of vaping liquids bought from stores in Salt Lake City.
