The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is commenting on the brutal murders of nine women and children in Mexico yesterday.

In a statement, a Church spokesman says leaders "are heartbroken to hear of the tragedy that has touched" the families.

The Church also says the victims are not members of the faith, but state "our love, prayers and sympathies are with them as the mourn and remember their loved ones."

The victims are members of families that are part an offshoot of the mainstream LDS Church.

It is not known if the victims were targeted by drug cartels, or if they were mistaken for someone else.
