President Russell M. Nelson of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints spoke out about a controversial church policy involving the children of LGBTQ couples.

In 2015, the LDS Church barred children of those couples from church rituals, such as baptism, without getting permission from the First Presidency beforehand.

Church leaders reversed the policy earlier this year.

Speaking at Brigham Young University's weekly devotional, President Nelson explained that both actions were motivated by love, stating that in 2015 Church leadership did not want to turn families against each other for having different beliefs.

The reversal came after Nelson says leaders saw the confusion and heartache that policy caused within the church's membership.
