Utah lawmaker filing bill forcing clergy members to disclose child sex abuse confessions
A Utah state lawmaker plans to file a bill that would force members of the clergy to make a report to police when someone confesses child sexual abuse to them.
Democratic Representative Angela Romero of Salt Lake City says there have been too many cover-ups of child sexual abuse by religious groups, including the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Currently, Utah law says confessions can remain confidential.
Romero says removing protections and punishing those who fail to report abuse could help put more predators behind bars.
